The recipe for our Zwiebelschmelz onion spread was created on a domestic stove just over 38 years ago. Its midwives were an empty household kitty and a love of experimentation. Soon it was necessary to find a bigger pan and ladle because friends, acquaintances and the first organic stores in the surrounding area discovered that our vegetarian Zwiebelschmelz was a delicious alternative to sausage and cheese. Today, many diligent hands – of now 100 employees – are responsible for a total of almost 100 different varieties of spreads, mustard specialities, tomato sauces and fruit jams.
38 years of expertise and experience in the manufacture of vegetarian delicacies from 100 % controlled organic farming. That makes us very happy, and that is something we are proud of.
Good to know: whenever you buy something in an organic food shop you kick off a positive chain reaction that extends far beyond the breakfast table – from healthy soil, preservation of agricultural cultivated landscapes, craft processing, regional freshness to your own health, well-being and enjoyment. At Zwergenwiese we’ve been on the organic road for over 30 years. With plenty of drive, imagination and a compass in your heart, you can combine ethical action and human cooperation with joie de vivre and success. For a better world, for us and our children, and for a world in which gnomes, meadows and butterflies feel happy.
Only about a quarter of the earth’s surface can be used as arable and grassland, forest and fishing grounds. Fertile soil is often just a spade deep. This is why it is all the more important that we treat this thin skin that feeds us with care. Factory farming, industrial agriculture and deforestation are destroying more and more fertile land. Natural organic farming is the only chance we have to safeguard world nutrition. This was also the conclusion of the latest investigation by the International Agricultural Assessment for Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development.* )
We are well aware of this, and that is why all our raw materials come from certified organic farming. Worldwide the area used for organic farming has increased to 35 million hectares. **) And with almost 1,000 hectares Zwergenwiese is doing its bit.
Nuclear power cannot be controlled and endangers our habitat and our children. There are alternatives. At Zwergenwiese we get our electricity from Greenpeace Energy, which comes 100 % from renewable energy sources. For us that’s worth paying a little bit more.
Nowadays we know just how sensitive the balance of the ecosystem reacts. We can hardly begin to fathom its complexity – and yet mankind continues to blindly intervene into nature’s blueprint, with unforeseeable long-term consequences. This is why organic farming is free from genetic engineering as a matter of principle. At Zwergenwiese we think that is right and so we support campaigns against GM.
Our organic farmers work with nature’s cycles. Traditional knowledge, experience and the latest scientific knowledge make organic farming the most modern and effective method of farming, uniting all aspects of sustainability and health – for a world worth living in for us and for future generations.
Our healthy and vitamin-rich carrots ripen under the clear North Sea skies in Dithmarschen. Our apples grow in the tradition-steeped Alten Land outside Hamburg. 100% of the aromatic strawberries for our Zwergenwiese FruchtGarten come from regional farms and are brought the short distance to us as soon as they are harvested. Our mustard seed is harvested on Bioland, Naturland and Demeter farms in Lower Saxony.
Around 150,000 jars now leave our production line daily. To guarantee the highest product quality at all levels we work successfully with the IFS quality management system, achieving best marks. All the crucial stages of production are recorded and und continuously improved – from the purchase of raw materials through all stations of the manufacturing process through to the careful handling of customer requests.
We regularly achieve the best marks from the IFS System because our staff implements this quality system in a committed manner on a daily basis. In 2015 we scored 99.26 %.
Zwergenwiese grew up in the heart of the natural food sector, with which we have enjoyed a long and reliable partnership, based on trust, respect and an ethical approach characterised by balanced give and take in our everyday business. And we are grateful for that.

Take our organic strawberries for example, from 100 % regional farms. At Zwergenwiese we have developed a very gentle manufacturing process. We discovered how to keep the full natural taste by using short processing times for small quantities. This is why our products do not need any additives or chemical box of tricks.
Our Zwergenwiese FruchtGarten products are made with a 70 % fruit content and sweetened with agave syrup. Some fruits, like rosehips or bitter orange, are so sour that we have to add a pinch of cane sugar (indicated by the red margin on the label). Our Zwergenwiese products are sophisticatedly seasoned and carefully composed to preserve their distinctive taste and typical character.
Recharging your batteries for the daily routine: with the right ‘fuel’ it’s easier for our bodies to stay healthy and keep in balance. All Zwergenwiese products are developed in our own test kitchen using the latest nutritional knowledge.
Our Zwergenwiese products are vegetarian and egg-free, predominantly vegan, gluten-free, yeast-free and also eminently suitable for diabetics. Instead of refined sugar we use the natural sweetness of apples and agaves.
The label includes full details about all ingredients and nutritional values – which is particularly important for allergy sufferers.
